The local forest in and around the Butterfly Conservatory is rich with a variety of tropical plants and diverse wildlife. There are families of howler monkeys, sloths, dozens of species of reptiles and amphibians, and 350 species of birds in the area. The adjoining primary rainforest corridor within the Conservatory grounds provide a path to the Children’s Eternal Rainforest and the Monteverde rainforest reserve, and has thousands of butterflies, long lines of leaf-cutter ants, and many exotic species of animals, plants, and insects.
Part of our operation includes 5 hectars (13 acres) of secondary, recovered forest, and this is expanding with new purchases. There are 6 covered atrium habitats representing the microclimates that attract various species of butterflies and insects. Our frog atrium exhibit features local amphibians and reptiles. The garden trails and rainforest river walk offer a large collection of ornamental and medicinal plants, and our host plant nurseries provide food for our hungry butterfly larvae.
